Who We Are
TFC aims to combat misinformation in the digital age, improve public information literacy, and safeguard the trust principles essential for democratic operations.
Taiwan FactCheck Center (TFC) was co-founded in April 2018 by the Taiwan Media Watch Foundation and the Association for Quality Journalism. Its mission is to counter the negative impacts of misinformation in the digital age through fact-checking, provide the public with information literacy, and safeguard the fundamental trust principles that underpin democratic processes.
In November 2018, TFC became the first fact-checking organization in the Chinese-speaking region and East Asia to receive certification from the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN). The certification acknowledged that TFC’s fact-checking methodology, organizational structure, and financial practices comply with IFCN’s standards for neutrality, independence, and transparency. TFC has maintained this certification to this day. In 2019, we joined Facebook’s (now Meta) “Third-Party Fact-Checking Program,” using our fact-checking efforts and platform mechanisms to help slow the spread of false information.
To ensure more robust and sustainable operations, TFC officially registered as the “Taiwan FactCheck Foundation” in New Taipei City at the end of 2020. The Foundation’s board oversees its operational policies, and the Foundation serves as the managing body of TFC. In response to the growing need for media literacy, TFC established an education department at the end of 2021, creating a media literacy podcast and promoting diverse media literacy education.
After more than six years of development, TFC has grown into a team of over ten members, becoming Taiwan’s leading organization in promoting fact-checking. In addition to providing verified information to the public during critical moments and explaining complex controversial issues, we also collaborate with partners in Taiwan’s information ecosystem to combat misinformation and promote accurate information.
